Tips to Avoid Heat Stroke in Children and Babies

We know that summer is a difficult season for drivers, who take the car at temperatures typical of hell. Just as much information comes up warning of the danger of leaving our pets locked in the car , it is also necessary to remember that babies and children are more sensitive to temperature changes than adults.

We have already heard on some occasions alerts of the type: "On a day of 36 ºC, the temperature inside a vehicle can rise to 67 ºC in just 15 minutes and cause the death of a child in less than an hour." Such high temperatures are not a joke for a human body that is about to develop, so we should consider the consequences that they could have. Do you know the symptoms of heat stroke ?

It may seem implausible to remember this, but every year new cases of forgetfulness arise: do not leave babies or children locked in the car , even if it is "just a moment." Either due to an oversight or mischief, it should be borne in mind that when it is hot outside, inside the cabin it multiplies, reaching extreme temperatures. Make sure that they are not left alone in the vehicle or that they have access to the keys , in order to avoid being locked up.

The Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP) recommends paying attention to the routine, which can make us forgetful, and leave personal items in the back of the car so that when we get out, we are forced to look back. It is also advisable to leave children in the back seat behind the passenger , not the driver. Keep the tips on child safety in mind ; They can save you some scare.

As discussed above, babies and children are more vulnerable to heat, according to the AEP, because:

  • The skin surface / body mass ratio is higher in children, which leads them to accumulate more heat .
  • The percentage of water in your body is higher than in adults.
  • They have less autonomy to drink . Children are not aware that they are thirsty and sometimes forget to drink, so they are more likely to become dehydrated.

If a child were to stay in a car at 36 ºC, his body temperature could rise to 42 or 43 ºC and in a period of between 30 minutes and an hour, this heat stroke, called hyperthermia , could cause death.

Symptoms of Heat Stroke:

To know how to act and identify a dangerous situation, it is necessary to know the warnings that the body gives us:

  • Fever and very hot skin. The appearance of sweat is not an unequivocal sign; sometimes there is not.
  • Fast breathing and increased heart rate.
  • Headache.
  • Irritability.
  • Vomiting
  • Be very intense.
  • Decay and decreased level of consciousness.
  • Seizures in the most severe cases.

Given these symptoms, the child should be moved to a cool place . If you are trapped, you must act with great caution so that, when breaking the glass, you are the one furthest from it. To lower body temperature, it is recommended to apply cold compresses to your head or immerse it in warm water . It is also recommended to give him water or liquids with salts to drink, and to use a fan.

Technology not to Forget:

We told you a while ago that an 11-year-old boy invented a system  called  EZ Baby Saver so that no one would forget babies and children in the car. The Italian company Remmy has created a device that connects to the car cigarette lighter and the baby seat. The device alerts the driver when the child moves from the seat and, most interestingly, when the engine is turned off, that the child is on board . And it does so by means of LED lights, which signal its correct operation and by means of an audible signal.

Another mobile app, called Kars 4 Kids Safety App , performs the same function. Its mechanism works through Bluetooth to remember that the little one is inside the car. Recently, Hyundai presented its " rear occupant alert " that detects movement in the rear seats with the car turned off and alerts the driver (and other users through the horn).

General Motors has also thought about this problem, which is very growing in the United States, and has included in the 2017 GMC Acadia model a message on the speedometer that tells you to look in the back seat before leaving the vehicle.

Contrary to popular belief, forgetting a child in the car doesn't just happen to "bad" parents; It could happen to anyone . We just have to include the necessary prevention mechanisms in our day to day to prevent this from happening.
