How to Protect your Car's Timing Belt?

By taking care of your timing belt, you can save yourself a lot of repair costs in your car later on. To find out how to read on

Your Engine needs its Timing Belt:

What is a timing belt on a car, truck, or 4x4? While maintaining and repairing your car, remember to check the timing belt. Why? Its name says it all: it makes all the parts of your engine work together at the right time.

The timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft of your car's engine. Think of it as a perfectly synchronized circular conveyor that supplies the shaft with the energy produced by your motor. It turns your wheels. If the drive belt slips or breaks, your engine may also be damaged.

Don't Forget your Drive Belt ... every 80,000 km:

It is made of durable heat resistant rubber. It is therefore able to withstand the constant work that is required of it, up to a certain level. Have your mechanic check your vehicle's drive belt during your car's regular maintenance.

If you own a newer car, consider replacing the drive belt every 80,000 to 160,000 km, or about every five to eight years. Your mechanic will let you know, as will the owner's manual for your make and model of vehicle.

What could Happen if you Forget to Change the Belt?

Vigilance remains the best way to proceed in the presence of a worn transmission belt. It may not give you clear warning signs. It can simply break. In this case, the engine will simply stop no matter where you are, which can of course be very dangerous.

Save yourself the cost of expensive engine repairs, including pistons, valves, cylinders, camshaft, and more. Buy a new drive belt instead. For a sum of $ 500 to $ 1000 parts and labor (depending on the make and model of vehicle), you can avoid a potentially disastrous situation.

How do I Know When to Check the Drive Belt?

You may be lucky enough to receive warning signs from your faulty drive belt. Go to your mechanic as soon as possible if you have any of these problems:

  • Exaggerated exhaust fumes due to engine speed
  • Engine difficult to start, especially with high mileage
  • The car heats up and the engine leaks on the transmission belt
  • The car is shaking because the engine timing is completely out of order

Start by Going to a Trustworthy Auto Repair Shop:

No tools, no engine part installation experience, and no idea what a tensioner means? Replacing a drive belt is not an automotive project for you. Instead, sit back, relax, and let your auto technician take care of your car's drive belt.
