Causes of Engine Ticking Noise (At Idle, Acceleration, & After Oil Change)

When engine works it make noises because there are many moving components inside the engine, normally these noises are not much high so there is nothing to worry to about. But there are times when engine start producing strange or unusual noises. For example ticking noise in the engine produced due to loose components and low level of oil, you may hear clicking and tapping sound in idling, acceleration and after oil change. In this article we will discuss about some common causes of engine tickling noise.

Common Causes of an Engine Ticking Noise:

1 Bad Reciprocating Components:

When you hear a ticking noise then it means reciprocating are involved, not the rotating component in this. Some examples of reciprocating components are valves, pushrods, pistons. If any of these parts become damaged or worn out due to any reason, then you will start hearing clicking noises. If you don’t change the components in timely manners, then the ticking noise becomes more severe clunking noises.

2 Low Amount of Engine Oil:

Low level of engine oil can also become a cause of ticking noises because low level of engine oil don’t lubricate the moving components of the engine and these components worn out due to increase in friction between moving parts of the engine. The low amount of engine oil because of damaged seals and worn out gaskets, low engine oil level increase the temperature of the engine and other symptoms also appear along with ticking noises.

3 Rod Knocking:

When the bearing of the rod worn out, then the rod will start touching its surrounding and damages its near components and we can feel this by hearing ticking noises coming from the engine. It doesn’t affect on the temperature of the engine but the RPM of the engine become fluctuate, the only solution for this problem is to rebuild engine which is going to be very expensive.

4 Fuel Injectors Firing:

Certain models of the vehicles with a fuel injection system, you may hear ticking sounds whenever injectors start firing. It happens because of quickly closing and opening in order to allow the right amount of fuel and air mixture entering in the combustion chamber. The sound produced due to this process is normal and there is nothing to worry about.
