Beat the Heat this Summer in your Car with these Maintenance Tips

Whether you're taking a break at the beach, tanning, or touring in a convertible, car maintenance is a must-have, even on vacation. As the summer heat builds, these car maintenance tips will help you beat the heat and keep your car in tip-top shape.

Make Sure your Car doesn't become a Sauna:

When parking our car in summer, we are not always lucky enough to find a place in the shade. This can cause your car to sit in sunlight for long hours, thus creating a suffocating temperature inside the vehicle, even making it impossible to touch the steering wheel or seat belts.

Leaving a slit in the windows open will help to get some air into the cab of the vehicle. However, make sure you leave them open for us so that no one can open it or enter things in it. Another way to keep your car cool is to put a sun visor on the windshield. By reflecting sunlight from your car, the car's temperature drops dramatically. Finally, if you have time, open all the doors (or windows) for a few minutes before entering the vehicle, in this way fresh air enters and will make the vehicle a more livable place.

Optimize the use of your Air Conditioner:

One of the most logical maintenance tips for your car for the summer is the frequent air conditioning service. If it doesn't seem to be cooling the way it should, there may be something wrong with your air conditioner.

Here are some tips to optimize the efficiency of your air conditioner:

  • Dry Climates with Low Humidity: Use the "ventilation", this brings in air from the outside of the car and will allow the air conditioning to work more efficiently.
  • High Humidity Areas: If you live in a place with high humidity, use the air conditioning and it will help more effectively to keep the car cool.

Check the Coolant Levels:

You may know how to regularly check your vehicle's fluid levels, which is especially important during the summer. When the temperature rises, your vehicle's cooling system has to work harder to prevent the engine from overheating.

Normally, the coolant needs to be changed once a year. If you don't want to pay a mechanic for it and your coolant reservoir is empty, carefully open the cap (but only when the engine is cold). Attempting to open the lid while the engine is hot can cause some of the coolant to shoot out of the pressurized tank at a very high temperature. For maximum efficiency, use a 50/50 mixture of distilled water and coolant in the tank. Because the frequency of coolant changes, as well as the recommended mixture, can vary, be sure to consult your vehicle owner's manual for more details specific to your particular car.

Check your Tire Pressure:

Tires are the part of the vehicle that is most affected on the highway. Another great tip for maintaining your car in the summer is to ensure your tires are at the proper pressure. High temperatures increase the impact suffered by the tires. If your tires are a little flat, there will be more friction between them and the road. Friction generates heat, and if the asphalt is already burning on its own, this combination can be a very bad idea. On the other hand, you should be aware that air expands in the heat, if your tires are over-inflated, they can lead to uneven tire wear, as well as an increased risk of getting a puncture and consequently a blowout.

Buy a pressure gauge and check your car's owner's manual to see what the specific pressure is recommended for your vehicle. This number usually appears on the inside of the driver's side door as well.

Avoid Possible Battery Failure:

For everyone who is interested in maintaining their own car, it is important to be aware of the problems that can appear in the battery at any time of the year. Some problems, however, can only arise during the summer. For example, the battery fluid may evaporate due to extreme temperatures. This can cause a general malfunction or failure of the charging system.

It is important to be very careful when performing car maintenance tasks that involve your battery. With this in mind, if the battery caps are removable, the liquid level in the battery can be checked. Also, ruling out any corrosion on the jumper posts and cables, as well as tightening the connections, can help your battery last longer. If you are uncomfortable taking care of the battery yourself, taking your vehicle to a professional for advice on car service and maintenance may be a good idea.
