3 Tips To Make A Car Last Longer

Even if you've been driving for a long time, there's nothing wrong with learning a few new tips for getting the most out of your car - this is a quick and easy little refreshment course.

1. Be Patient During the Break-in Period:

You bought your dream car and now you want it to stay in top condition for as long as possible. Here are a few things to keep in mind when taking it out of your dealership's fleet:

  1. During the break-in period, the first 1,600 km, keep your speed below 88 km/hour or the speed recommended by your car manufacturer;
  2. Avoid heavy loads on the transmission, such as trailers and loading heavy construction materials on the roof rack or in the roof box;
  3. Don't let your new car idle for long periods of time - this is true for the life of your vehicle and especially during break-in. The risk is that the oil pressure will prevent the oil from circulating in all parts of your engine;
  4. Choose low to moderate acceleration, keeping engine revs below 3000 RPM for the first few hours of driving.

2. Show Your Address When Blocked:

When you get stuck in mud or snow, don't make it worse by damaging an expensive part. Gently rocking the vehicle to free it is a wise solution, but if you are really stuck, don't insist.

  • Moving your car back and forth several times and spinning the tires at high speeds can generate a lot of heat and damage the transmission, clutch, and differentials.
  • In the long run, it can be less expensive to hire a tow truck than to risk big repair bills.
  • Consider placing items in the trunk that will facilitate possible traction such as sand, gravel and kitty litter.

3. Do Not Put Your Foot On The Brake:

Do not leave your foot on the brake pedal while driving.

  • Even slight pressure can cause resistance that will wear the brakes and waste gasoline.

By following these tips, you will be able to wear out your car less quickly, and therefore avoid or delay certain repairs in the future.
