Toyota Supra

To satisfy its fans with a fondness for sports cars, Toyota has decided to join forces with BMW for the development of its new Supra, which shares its platform with the Z4. It remains to be seen whether this is a usurpation of this mythical name or a real evolution.

It's no secret that if the automotive sector is going through an unprecedented crisis in recent years, with the explosion of the diesel gate affair, Toyota has long ago decided to target its new developments on vehicles combining, for the most part, practicality and ecology. Therefore, in view of the current climate, the Japanese manufacturer had to compromise to make the name Supra a reality. And what a compromise! While the Supra is in the temple of the most legendary sports cars in the world, Toyota has teamed up with BMW to develop a common platform, used in the German clan for the new generation of the Z4.

It would therefore be wrong to say that the Toyota soul transpires from this Supra from a technical point of view. Under its hood, we find the excellent six line 3.0l of the Z4 M40i, developing a cavalry of 340 horses, for 500 Nm of torque, available from 1600 rpm. The mill is associated with an eight-speed automatic gearbox signed ZF, which is responsible for sending all the power to the rear wheels.

Japanese engineers have sharpened the chassis and the optimization of the architecture, so as to offer a weight of 40kg less than the Z4 (1495kg for the Supra). At the same time, the chassis and suspensions are more rigid, for a much more sporty temperament than that of the Teutonic. In practice, this allows the Supra to set off at 100 km / h in just 4.3 seconds.

On board, BMW enthusiasts will not be disoriented, and will discover the same multimedia system, identical air conditioning controls and a similar speed selector. The steering wheel is also borrowed from the manufacturer from the propeller. However, the virtual cockpit stands out rather well with an architecture combining physical and digital components. The rev counter is placed in the center of attention, while the rest of the screen shows us various practical information, such as consumption, activation of certain assistance, or the speed limit in force at the place where the vehicle is traveling.

Overall, the finish is more than correct, even if it does not meet BMW standards, especially in terms of certain plastics or assembly techniques, revealing unwanted noise for a car of this standing. The interior is also less generous in terms of storage space than that of the Z4. However, access to the trunk is relatively easy from the cockpit. In the end, the results are rather positive, with a car embedding advanced technologies, but knowing how to put them aside to benefit from an “old-style” driving.

At start-up, the roar of the in-line six is suppressed by the particle filter, making the car almost silent. After only a few hundred meters on board, you immediately realize the work done on depreciation. Notwithstanding the driving position and the lack of space inherent in the coupe, it feels like driving a high-end sedan as the level of comfort is high. In comfort mode, the passenger compartment very well absorbs the rolling noise generated by the 275/35 R19 tubes placed just behind the seats. We would almost see ourselves going on vacation with how pleasant it is.

By deviating from the main axes, which give way to more winding roads, we activate the sport mode, which transforms it instantly. The once silent engine reveals its vocal timbre better. New standards require, the coupe is still too quiet for our taste. The purchase of a new exhaust will most likely resolve this small concern.

Very linear, the block cash without flinching all the stresses of the right foot and this on all the ranges of mode. At the same time, the chassis, specially calibrated by Japanese engineers, is formidable. While the rear axle assumes the cavalry without flinching, the front axle lets itself be guided with disconcerting precision and without ever showing the slightest sign of stalling. Without having really had time during our test to be able to exploit the full potential of this Supra, it appears to us as a sportswoman with healthy but fun behavior.

The Toyota Supra A80 of the 90s will remain for a long time in the minds of lovers of beautiful mechanics, this new Supra has been able to surf with flying colors on the wave of pooling of platforms, in an era unfortunately complicated for the sports car. For this, we take our hat off to Toyota for resuscitating the Supra.
